The best time to find help and healing for anxiety, panic and overwhelm is not when you are right in the middle of it.  It is better to have a tool that you can use at anytime you start to feel yourself getting absorbed in worry and negativity. Therapy works well to get to the bottom of habitual fear based thoughts and living and can and should be supported by tools to help you in the moment – mantra meditation is one of these tools and it works, it can be a life-changer!

Finally making headlines and being validated with scientific proof, mindfulness and meditation is a powerful tool in healing and  it’s many benefits are being uncovered daily, but the truth is, it’s pretty hard to settle down and get still and quiet when our thoughts and hearts are racing. That is why Mantra Meditation is an amazing option specifically for anxiety, fear, panic and overwhelm.  It is a very active thought and voice that can over ride and replace the fearful, obsessive mind chatter and scattered energy in the midst of the intense and sticky feelings.

In the moment mantra meditation can disrupt a stressful response and rhythm (usually our thoughts and energy) and replace it with a soothing, healing, positive and even energizing rhythm.

Here are some things to consider when starting a mantra meditation practice:

  • There are several different types of “mantras” you can try and it’s important to choose a practice that gives you the desired help, support and healing that you are seeking, so trying several different styles until you find what suits you is recommended.
  • There are spiritual mantras that may be in Sanskrit or Prakrit, and many believe these ancient languages and mantras are a direct connection to healing and source.  There are thousands variations and mantras and most have an intention, energy and effect as a result of practicing that can be immediate or deepen over time. You can search google and YouTube and listen to examples of these mantras until you find one you’d like to give a try. A simple one that I have really enjoyed and recommend is SO HUM meaning “I AM THAT” – that refers to all of creation, the one breathing us all.  It is most beneficial to really embody this feeling while chanting – here is a recording I particularly liked and found easy to follow. This is easy enough to do on your own in the moment or practice twice a day over a period of time to really disrupt patterns of anxiety and overwhelm.

  • If you do not feel called to the spiritual practice of mantras, you can choose affirmations and repeat to soothing music or even soothing music with a positive tone and again the intention is to disrupt and replace so you do need to give yourself the time and space to really allow this new rhythm into your life.   Choosing an affirmation that replaces thoughts can be as easy as choosing the opposite of your worry, fear or doubt –  here is one that tends to be a great start to disrupt most of our deepest fears …

“I am safe, I trust, I am loved”

Music – that’s up to you and chances are there is a song you already know that has been there for you, expand your library and intentionally build a playlist to soothe, calm, heal and energize!

There is so much more to be said on how powerful mantra mediation is, and while in the midst of intense feelings and emotions we will meet our resistance – with a little practice and persistence, you will be amazed at  how this seeminly simple practice can change your life, your outlook, your ability to regulate emotions and your perception of the people and world around you!  It’s AWESOME – I hope you give it a try, because it’s your personal experience that will provide the evidence, not the information here, just a guide;)

Peace,

Ron
